System log and event log
How to search the system's operational log by level, channel, text and company, view the run-time chart, and delete unneeded log lines.
The system log records a line about every important background operation: when, on which channel, how severe and how long it ran. When troubleshooting or looking for slow processes, it is the first place to look.
Searching the log
- Open System → Log; the screen title is System log.
- In the filter choose Level (for example errors only) and Channel, type into Search in message…, and for a specific company choose Company group and Partner.
- Narrow the period with Date from and Date to or the Quick range buttons, then click Filter.
- The list columns are Event, Channel, Duration.
- Click the run-time chart icon to see run times per channel; by default it shows the last 7 days and starts with the slowest channel.
Deleting log lines
- Selected lines: with the bin icon (Delete).
- All lines matching the filter: with the broom icon in the header (Clear (filtered)). Confirmation: "Delete ALL log entries matching the current filter?" This deletion ignores the company filter and only uses level, channel and text.
Event log
The Event → Log menu item (screen title: Logs) is a simple list in reverse date order with Code, Message and Date added columns, 20 lines per page. There is no filter or delete here.
Example
At Sample Ltd. the invoice list did not refresh in the morning. The administrator filters the System log by the error level and by Sample Ltd. in the Partner field: a NAV query error appears with its time and message. After the fix they clean up the old error lines with Clear (filtered).
